Understanding What Counts

What Is A Dental Emergency?

If you are in serious discomfort or pain due to any oral health issue, you’re having a dental emergency. Common dental emergencies include cracked, loose, or avulsed (knocked-out) teeth due to oral injuries, as well as toothaches, lost or damaged dental work, and bleeding teeth or gums.

Not sure if your condition counts? It’s better to be safe than sorry. Give our team a call, tell us about your condition, and get the help you need from Dr. David Nill at Riverwalk Dental Care.

What Should I Do in A Dental Emergency?

If you have a knocked-out tooth, recover your tooth and put it in a container of cold milk to keep it moist. Contact us immediately for an appointment. Your tooth must be splinted and re-attached within 1-2 hours, or it will die and we will not be able to save it. Do not waste any time, and come to our office ASAP.

If you have a loose or missing piece of dental work, recover it and put it into a plastic baggie, and bring it in with you to your appointment. Give us a call to schedule a consultation right away. If your tooth hurts, you can use Orajel or an over-the-counter pain reliever to help with discomfort until you can see Dr. Nill.

If your tooth is bleeding due to an injury, it may be cracked or damaged. Give us a call right away to schedule an emergency appointment. Then, you can use clean gauze or paper towels to absorb blood, which should slow down within 1-2 hours. You can also apply an ice pack to your cheek for 10 minutes at a time to help with discomfort and swelling. However, these are temporary measures. You need to come to our office as soon as you can to have your tooth permanently repaired and restored.

Preparing

For An Emergency Appointment

If you want to be prepared for your emergency appointment in Norwalk, there are a few things you can do. Here are the best ways you can prepare for your emergency appointment and ensure your treatment goes smoothly when you come to Riverwalk Dental Care for your same-day appointment.

  • Keep a “tooth emergency” kit on-hand – It’s a good idea to create a kit containing items like Orajel, pain relievers, clean gauze, temporary dental cement, and a small container with a lid for transporting a damaged tooth or piece of dental work. You can keep this at the office, at home, or in your car, wherever is easy to access. This way, you’ve got everything you need to take care of your mouth before your appointment.
  • Call us immediately after your emergency – As soon as you notice your emergency, contact Riverwalk Dental Care at (203) 286 8668. Dr. Nill will see you as soon as possible, but it’s important to call right away so that we can squeeze you in for a same-day consultation at our office in Norwalk.
  • Recover your tooth, fragments, or dental work (if applicable) – If you have lost a tooth, or it has been seriously damaged and you can recover the fragments, do so. You can put them into a plastic container with some cold milk to keep them moist. You can do the same thing for dental work like a filling or crown, but skip the milk. It’s not necessary, since dental work is inorganic and it can dry out with no negative effects.
  • Clear your schedule and bring someone who can drive with you, if possible – Depending on your issue, you may need to get oral surgery right away, and sedation may be necessary for your comfort. Because of this, we recommend clearing your schedule as much as possible in case you can’t go back to work or handle other day-to-day tasks. Bringing someone with you is also great for moral support, and bringing someone who can drive means you can be driven home safely if you need to be sedated.
  • Bring in your ID, insurance card, and a payment method – If you’re a new patient, you’ll need to bring in a photo ID like a driver’s license, as well as your insurance card. If you’re a returning patient, we’ll only need your insurance card if you’ve changed your plan since your last visit.

You’ll also need to bring a payment method in case your insurance requires any co-pays at the time of your treatment, such as a credit card. We also offer payment plans through CareCredit at our office.
  • Be ready to discuss medical issues & medications with Dr. Nill – Depending on the circumstances of your dental emergency, you may need to discuss any of your past medical issues with Dr. David Nill, as well as any medications you are taking. This ensures the team at Riverwalk Dental Care can provide the best possible care for your condition.
